Consider this gum leaf

Consider this gum leaf:

        here is the reed

        that plays

        in the dry throat

        of a hot northerly,

        summer’s strident song.

        The thin green blade

        that prints

        a white sickle moon

        above dark stubble.

        The tinctured air

        of sharp

        and pungent eucalyptus

        rubbed upon the warm

        and oiled night.
