The Stone Train - 6am
This long train reinvents the morning
a huge green diesel signalled to the dawn
pulling truck after truck of broken stone
on whistled errands of a slow shunting
load after load of white metal climbing
out of the dark on hard and lustrous din
grinding light out in the tunnelled storm
of its brash articulated banging
the engine roughly divides the town in two
dragging all the reluctant day behind
a final carriage coupled to the rest
but moving with antithesis in view
a clockwork with no other cause to wind
the stone train is remaking the darkness.
